CONSULTANT LED SERVICES FOR PATIENTS
OF OAKLANDS HEALTH CENTRE
Consultant led clinics are held at,
or very local to, Oaklands Health
Centre.
These services are provided by Drs
Shamsee, Ward and Associates to
bring consultants, experts in their
respective fields, to you the
patient, rather than sending you to
see them at their hospital
consulting rooms.
Patients being seen at these
‘outreach’ clinics can expect the
waiting time for their first
appointment to be much shorter than
if they were going to the hospital
to be seen. In most cases, the
waiting time for the first
appointment is 4 to 5 weeks. In all
cases, patients are referred to
these clinics by their doctor or
nurse practitioner and cannot be
directly accessed without first
seeing a clinician at Oaklands
Health Centre.
Ear, Nose & Throat Clinics
These are held on one evening each
month at Oaklands Health Centre with
Mr Wickham MB ChB FRCS, who is based
with Barnsley Foundation Trust. Mr
Wickham provides a complete Ear,
Nose and Throat clinic and has a
special interest in head & neck
surgery, thyroid diseases and
salivary gland disease. Mr Wickham
is accompanied by an Audiology
nurse, who is available to carry out
hearing tests.
Rheumatology Clinics
These are held on one evening each
month at Oaklands Health Centre with
consultants based with Barnsley
Foundation Trust. The accompanying
rheumatology nurse supports the
consultant in providing advice to
patients. This is a well established
and well attended clinic, which
provides a vital link for patients
with rheumatological problems to
consultants without the need to
travel far.
Gynaecology Clinics
These outpatient clinics are held
fortnightly at Holme Valley Memorial
Hospital. Many women find an
appointment at Holme Valley Memorial
Hospital is convenient and far less
stressful than attending a busy
hospital. These clinics are
available to ladies with routine
gynaecological problems.
Orthopaedic Clinics (from
April 2009)
Three levels of clinic will operate
on Thursday evenings at Oaklands
Health Centre. Consultants from the
BMI hospitals will alternate their
fortnightly surgeries between upper
and lower limb clinics. Mr Shaath
MSc (orth), FRCSI from Barnsley
Foundation Trust will provide a
monthly clinic, which will cover a
full range of orthopaedic problems.
Ophthalmology Clinics
These clinics are held on Fridays at
Holmfirth Eye Clinic, behind Elmwood
Health Centre. This clinic is led by
Mr Davey MB BS, FRCOphth and is
supported by a team of consultant
ophthalmologists and orthoptists.
Often referrals to this clinic are
prompted by a visit to a high street
optician, who can recommend to your
GP that you are referred to a
consultant for further
investigation.
Elderly Care Clinics (from
March 2009)
This clinic is held at Oaklands
Health Centre and led by Dr Suzi
Orme BM BS, who is based with
Barnsley Foundation Trust. Dr Orme
specialises in geriatric medicine
and will be seeing elderly patients
with complex medical needs. These
are patients who especially may find
it difficult to travel to hospital
and benefit hugely from such a
service being brought closer to
home.
What happens next?
After your initial consultation, the
consultant will decide whether you
can be discharged from the service,
if you should be seen again at the
outreach clinic for a follow up
appointment, or if further
investigations or procedures need to
be carried out in a hospital
setting. In each case, your
consultant will fully explain their
decision and will keep your GP
informed of your progress at all
times.
